Manikarnika Ghat is one of the oldest Ghats in Banaras and has been given the highest position among other Ghats by the sacred texts of Hinduism. Talking about history, the mention of Manikarnika Ghat is also found in a Gupta inscription of the 5th century. It is believed that when Goddess Adi Shakti, incarnated as Goddess Sati, jumped into the fire because of her father's insult, Lord Shiva took her burning body to the Himalayas. At that time, Lord Vishnu, seeing the plight of Lord Shiva, threw his Sudarshan Chakra on the burning body of Goddess Adi Shakti, which broke her body into 51 pieces. The places where the pieces of his body fell on the earth were declared as Shaktipeeths. At the same time, the earrings of Mata Sati fell on the Manikarnika Ghat, so it was established as a Shakti Peetha and named as Manikarnika as Manikarna means earring in Sanskrit.
